<br \/>a huge lemon tree <br \/>treehouse <br \/><br \/><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><strong>[time]<\/strong> <br \/><\/span><span class=\"s3\">midday. <br \/><br \/><br \/><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: right;\"><i>kid walks in wearing a tattered, yellow <br \/>wedding dress. he is distraught and dirty; <br \/>sluggish, clammy, dragging his hooves. he has <br \/>been walking for a long time. could be hours, <br \/>could be years. he sees a abnormally giant <br \/>lemon-tree treehouse and decides to sit under <br \/>it. he sits. he begins to dry heave violently. <br \/>spits. spits. coughs. dry heaves. he looks out <br \/>to the audience. his breath is too heavy to hold. <br \/>he dry heaves again, vigorously. he is doing so <br \/>on purpose, to purge his body of something. <br \/><br \/>a half-goat walks from around the lemon-tree<br \/>treehouse and sees kid sitting over his own<br \/>pool of spit. he is disgusted, recoils and<br \/>quickly walks away. kid looks up at the <br \/>audience.<br \/><br \/>[pause]<br \/><br \/>he spits towards them. not at them\u2014towards<br \/>them. two half-goats walk in, well-dressed,<br \/>talking, laughing, notice kid and are also<br \/>disgusted. they laugh and walk away. another<br \/>half-goat, walking a dog, on her phone, walks<br \/>by kid and does not notice him whatsoever. <br \/><br \/>a city of half-goats [not in this order] begin<br \/>trickling on in a staggered manner from all<br \/>over [even from the audience]. they are going<br \/>to wherever it is city people need to go. we lose <br \/>sight of kid as they fill the stage.<br \/><br \/>school kids telling jokes. a young couple in<br \/>love. a jogger. a business man. a homeless<br \/>person. a security guard. another jogger, but<br \/>heavy set\u2014really heavy set. an art gallery<br \/>curator. a small group of people going to a<br \/>yoga class. a postman. a UPS delivery man.<br \/>a waiter. an old couple in love. <br \/><br \/>a little old lady, alone, walking extremely slow.<br \/>struggling to carry her bags filled with<br \/>pomegranates, struggling to walk. no one<br \/>acknowledges her. the pomegranates keep<br \/>falling out of her bag with every step.<br \/><\/i><i>no one offers help. <br \/><br \/>a mechanic pushing\/rolling a spare tire across<br \/>the stage. another couple, flirting, one of<br \/>them is walking a bike by their side. an 8yr old <br \/>girl carrying a carton of cigarettes for her<br \/>mother. a drag queen. a group of teenage<br \/>girls giggling on their cellphones. a 6-foot<br \/>anglo-european blond male wearing nothing<br \/>but speedos and shower shoes carrying a<br \/>balloon. a sad clown drinking beer. a drag king.<br \/>six men in black suits wearing black<br \/>sunglasses. <br \/><br \/>the little old lady, this time at center stage, still<br \/>walking slow. struggling to carry her bags<br \/>filled with pomegranates, struggling to walk.<br \/>no one acknowledges her. the pomegranates<br \/>keep falling out of her bag with every step.<br \/>the bags are almost empty now.<br \/>no one offers help.<br \/><br \/>a bank teller, a hungry pimp, an opera singer.<br \/>a millionaire. 3 street performers carrying an<br \/>amp and a drum set. movers carrying a lips-<br \/>shaped couch. a charlie chaplin impersonator.<br \/>the monopoly guy. e.t.. cab calloway. gandhi.<br \/>a happy clown carrying a dark cloud that\u2019s<br \/>dripping rain over his head. a man wearing a<br \/>sandwich board that reads \u201chave you seen<br \/>god?\u201d around his neck. a female shaman <br \/>burning sage, a giant dancing turkey. a<br \/>ventriloquist. <br \/><br \/>a musician carrying her tuba. a father pulling<br \/>his daughter along in a red wagon as she<br \/>blows soap bubbles into the air. a douchebag.<br \/>a wino. a whore. the blues brothers. mickey<br \/>mouse. ronald mcdonald. big bird from<br \/>sesame street and tweety. a king. a servant.<br \/>a wise old man. a damsel in distress.<br \/>pocahontas. a cowboy. an elderly jogger with<br \/>new balance brand sneakers. an italian baker<br \/>carrying eleven baguettes. a newsie. a<br \/>starbucks barista. pigeons. an escaped<br \/>convict. a nun. the pope. the dalai lama.<br \/><\/i><i><br \/>as they all work their way offstage, we see the<br \/>little old lady again, her bags are empty. still<br \/>walking slow. still struggling to walk. no one<br \/>acknowledged her. no one offered help. <br \/>the floor of the stage is completely covered <br \/>with pomegranates. <br \/><br \/>she exits. <br \/><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span class=\"s4\"><strong>KID<\/strong> <br \/><\/span><span class=\"s3\">I ask why a lot. <br \/><br \/>Why I crackled; <br \/>why I fed him both of my lungs <br \/>but left myself hungry <br \/>inside his hands\u2014 <br \/>like the ocean, rousing, <br \/>circling with hunger in mind. <br \/>Like a horned fool. <br \/><br \/>I prayed for his body <br \/>with butterflies and ladybugs <br \/>for 7 years of \u201cNo\u201d, \u201cGet away\u201d, <br \/>\u201cI don\u2019t want you\u201d, <br \/>and dust under my lips. <br \/><br \/>His skin still lingers in the air <br \/>every time I turn the fan on. <br \/><br \/>I hate space; to have the last gasp. <br \/>Yo quer\u00eda tu alma; to reach the top of the mountain,<br \/><\/span>to ride the waves of these push-and-pulls. <br \/>To say yes\u2014doggy paddling if need be. <br \/><br \/>If I needed that. But I don\u2019t. <br \/>I\u2019m done. I did it and I\u2019m done. <br \/><br \/>I ask why a lot, <br \/>but don\u2019t ask for much. <br \/><br \/>I\u2019m putting our relationship-wreck <br \/>where the flowers grow now. <br \/>What else do you do with the deceased, huh?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span class=\"s3\">What I dunno\u2026 <br \/><br \/>You\u2019re a dead body to me now though, <br \/>someone else\u2019s problem. <br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: right;\"><i>kid begins to cry. he wipes the tears away. <br \/>sniff. sniff. gathers his goat self together. he <br \/>is proud, nervous; sad but lighter in the chest. <br \/>he sits upright, eyes still moist. <br \/><br \/>[silence] <br \/><br \/>the little old lady slowly walks back in. <br \/>she is no longer carrying bags, only one <br \/>pomegranate in her left hand. a lush garden <br \/>of beautiful orchids have grown all over her <br \/>back since we last saw her. she slowly walks to <br \/>center stage. stops. pauses. turns towards the <br \/>lemon tree treehouse, and begins to walk, <br \/>slowly, head down. the sound of her hooves <br \/>on the floor are loud. she sits next to kid. <br \/><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><span class=\"s4\"><strong>OLD LADY<\/strong> <br \/><\/span><span class=\"s3\">I met genius <br \/>on the bus today. <br \/>She was a 7-day-old-gorilla <br \/>with a pirate leg <br \/>and a late night stench. <br \/>She was carrying a smoke signal <br \/>in case she needed to call on God. <br \/>She bumped into me on purpose. <br \/>I said, \u201cExcuse me.\u201d <br \/>She said, \u201cNo need to explain. <br \/>If there\u2019s one thing I\u2019ve learned <br \/>in my space-traveling-days, <br \/>besides the fact <br \/>that the jet lag of jumping <br \/>into a new body <br \/>feels like you\u2019ve just been born <br \/>into a brand-new-slowly-dying-death, <br \/>it is that everyone cries <br \/>just like everyone dreams, <br \/>even the blind.<br \/><\/span><i><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: right;\"><i>she hands kid her last pomegranate. <br \/>they hug.<br \/><br \/><\/i><span class=\"s5\"><strong>[end of play]<\/strong><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"[people] KIDlatinx. male. half-goat.
