Malik Gaines
Malik Gaines works in performance. He has exhibited and performed with the group My Barbarian, whose survey exhibition was presented at the Whitney Museum and ICA LA (2021-22) and was accompanied by the book My Barbarian (Yale University Press, 2021). He is the composer of operatic works including Star Choir, presented by the Industry LA in 2023. He is the author of many articles and essays about art and performance and the book Black Performance on the Outskirts of the Left (NYU Press, 2017). Gaines is a Professor of Visual Arts at the University of California, San Diego.
